Last week, on 11th July 2022 to be exact, more than 150 self-employed blind people, not belonging to any popular organization, have come together and staged a protest at the premises of State Commissioner for the Welfare of Differently abled persons Tamilnadu. The primary objective of the protest is to oppose the government's refusal to recognize the blind people with more than 80 percent disability as severely disabled and to create a proper understanding of the government in this regard.

They have come together under the name Blind Community Coordinating Committee. Amicable talks have also been held with the newly appointed commissioner.

In the agitation field, they have insisted some of their livelihood grievances such as Blind sellers, traveling from town to town should be exempted from baggage charges in buses for the loads they carry, and withholding old age pension for the blind people saying any reason in many districts should be avoided.

Above all, more than 80 percent of blind people are self-employed. Therefore, they have requested the government to appoint one of the self-employed blind persons as a member of the Disabled Persons Welfare Board and the Disabled Persons Advisory Board, who want to provide adequate advice on the schemes of the government and ensure that the marginally blind people can enjoy its full benefit.

The fact that more than 150 blind people have gathered together and the protest has been going on constructively without any media light or warmth from the leading organizations has given rise to new hopes.

Congratulations! For the Blind Community Coordination Committee.
